Oak Street Pizza

How can you open a restaurant, especially a pizzeria, and have such a buzz about the place so quickly? They’re even winning the “Best Pizza in Louisville” poll here on our website. Read on and find out why…

I picked up an Oak Street Pizza menu from Derby City Espresso (which is supposedly about to start selling slices!!) and it’s been sitting on my desk for a couple weeks now. I never knew exactly where it was, so it was never on the Louisville Lunch calendar.

This is one of those blink-and-you-miss-it places. Jam and I were trying to get on I-264 to run toward St. Matthews, when we were at a stoplight, and I said, “Whoa…that’s Oak St. Pizza, Jam! We’re going there instead”. Jam put away the Cheesecake Factory (yeah, I know!) gift card that we were going to use, and gladly agreed. I don’t think he can pass up pizza.

There are two tables in the place. One outside, which we passed up since it was a bit cold, and one inside. Two chairs at each. I love that. It’s definitely a take-out/delivery place (they’ll deliver anywhere in Louisville, too!) It’s definitely got character, which we like.

We decided to get the small (!) calzone to split as well as an order of the Kassidy’s Garlic Knots (with cheese). The Garlic Knots came out first, and the guy that took our order brought out an extra marinara for us to avoid double-dipping (thanks!). These little knots of dough were pretty good. Next time, I think I’ll get it without the cheese, as it made it a bit greasy and didn’t add that much to them. Jam and I agreed that they were a bit doughy, and could maybe stand to be cooked a bit longer, but that didn’t keep us from eating them all.

The calzone came out, and we both were surprised at how big the small calzone was, a great oxymoron. We cut into it, and the cheese came oozing out and released a large amount of steam. Our mouths were watering. We got it filled with pepperoni and sausage, and were surprised to see disc-shaped sausage, although they were quite tasty. The first thing I noticed about the cheese was how creamy it was. I mean CREAMY! I asked the owner who was busy slinging pies in the kitchen, and he said they used Ricotta cheese along with the standard mozzarella. That’s IT…so simple, and adds SO much to the Calzone.

We’ll definitely be back, and expand our selections. I’ve got to try their pasta and obviously, their pizza. I’ll write some follow-up reviews…as if they need any more press! 😉

We now have our name in the window so it’s a bit easier to spot the shop now of days. We will only be doing slices at derby city espresso during events they hold there. Hope you enjoyed your last calzone! Thanks for the support !
