Frankfort Ave. Beer Depot (FABD Smokehouse)

FABD ParkingThere are quite a few things I’m passionate about in this mortal coil, and here are but three: Barbecue, Beer and Ping-Pong (yep, I call it ping-pong, I’m not one of those ‘Table Tennis” purists). So, if you’re expecting a bad review of FABD, you’ve come to the wrong food blog, my friend.

This place is a man’s lair. It’s like a rumpus room. It’s paradise. Where else can you find a bar/restaurant/pub with ping-pong, pool, shuffleboard, corn hole and a miniature golf course, humorously called “Beerhalla”? From where Jam and I were sitting, we counted 10 TV’s that were viewable from our vantage point. I got the pleasure of watching both that “send-us-your-crazy-video” show on SpikeTV and a Planet of the Apes movie on the TV next to it. Jam was stuck watching “Days of Our Lives”.

Jam had a hard time deciding between the Chicken Fingers ($6.00) and the BBQ Chicken Sandwich ($4.00) , so I persuaded him to go with the BBQ which is smoked daily about 20 feet from where we sat…mmm…that smell. He also added “Two Handfuls” (yes, that’s how it’s measured in the menu) of fries ($3.50).

I had to go with the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($4.00) with one handful of fries ($2.00). Being from Western Kentucky, barbecue is a way of life. We know what’s good, and man, this stuff’s GOOD. Their sauce is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy, although I prefer a bit more heat. The fries are big and crinkly and are great dipped in the BBQ sauce. Jam preferred his usual honey mustard.

On previous visits, we’ve had the Smokehouse Chili (a measly $2.00!), the $3 Burger (would you expect less from Sammy?), and the Mac and Cheese as a side ($2.50 for 8oz). All have met our approval.

As you can tell if you’ve been reading the archives here at LouisvilleLunch.com, we like places with a bit of flair, a little character with our food. I’m telling you…this place has both. They also have a super nice staff that will even come out to the covered ping-pong table to let you know your food’s gettin’ cold.

I have to mention their menu lets you know that they “rub the best Butts”? Yup. Ours weren’t even touched, but Jam did have a bit of lipstick on his collar. Or was that barbecue sauce?

ASIDE: There are a couple drawbacks to playing ping-pong outdoors:

  • It’s cold this time of year.
  • It’s really red and bright under that awning.
  • In the Summer, there’s the wind to contend with. Calling interference on an invisible force doesn’t always take.
  • If it is raining (like it was today), you have to chase the balls before they land in a puddle.
  • It’s not as cozy as our office ping-pong table. Although there are far less complaints.

Great review, but what about the beer list? They have one of the best selections of craft beer on Frankfort Ave., including New Albanian, Stone, and Rogue beers ON TAP! I love this place.
