El Mundo

I think at least one of my parents must secretly be from Mexico. I would eat this food every day of the week if I could. I mostly love that there are like 5-10 ingredients, but hundreds, nay, thousands of scrumptious possibilities.

So, being such a Mexican food junkie, I know you’ll be surprised to know that I have never been to El Mundo before Jam and I headed out the other day. It’s like, a sin or something, right? This is THE hipster spot for gettin’ yo’ burrito and margarita on, right? Well, let ’em have it…I’ll be at El Caporal.

Jam and I ordered some chips and salsa ($1.50! What?) and a Coke (his was Diet, of course), and as the waitress went to get them, I read on the menu, NO REFILLS. Crap. Are you serious? I can’t stand getting charged $1+ for a Coke at a restaurant, and having them bring me a freaking can from a $5 12-pack. Free refills and fountain sodas are the norm nowadays, right? Jam wasn’t having it. He got up, and canceled his drink order, and changed to water. They at least give refills on those, he hoped. I was also surprised to not receive complimentary chips and salsa, like my other favorite Mexican spots, but Nooooo. Man, am I being too rough on these guys?

I decided on the Lunch Combo Plate (with a Chicken Burrito) – $7.95. Not a bad price, I thought. It came with rice and black beans on the side. We then realized the drinks came with the lunch special. Oops. Calm down Jam and Sammy…calm it down….it’s just drinks here… Jam got the same, but got a chicken quesadilla instead.

The burrito arrived, and I got out my magnifying glass to get a better look. Whoa. The burrito was drizzled with a red sauce and some swirly sour cream, nice touch. Looked yummy! I’m not saying the burrito was bad, but I don’t know if it would have filled up my 5 year old. The red rice was AWESOME…the right bit of kick and onions. The beans were okay, for black beans…which I normally don’t like a whole lot.

Maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but neither one of us was too impressed. I know they’re known for the fish tacos (who isn’t, really), and not being too keen on cabbage, I didn’t order them. My tough luck, I guess.

The one, unexpected free twist, was some homemade chocolate chip cookies and coffee after our meal. I think I would have rather had complimentary chips and salsa. I needed those to get filled up.

I have a love/hate relationship with El Mundo. I freaking love their veggie burritos and their guacamole. Freaking love. The last couple times I went there though the service was less than friendly. So much so the last time I haven’t been back there in months, since maybe August. I’ve craved the food but I have such a bad taste in my mouth from the last time I was there I just end up going someplace else.

Now you’ve really got me in the mood for their veggie burrito though so I may have to suck it up and give it another shot sometime soon.
