Derby City Dogs

I really like hot dogs. There…I said it. But not the type that most people think of…made of 3 different types of animals, of parts that you don’t want to know about. What I like is All-beef hot dogs. Kosher. Delish.

Derby City Dogs is right in the heart of the Highlands. You really couldn’t ask for a better location. It reminds me of something that would be in New York City: just a window where you place your order, on the sidewalk. There’s a nice bar that you can get out of the way to enjoy your dog. The day Jam and I went, there was quite a line formed, almost blocking the sidewalk traffic, which on the corner of Baxter Ave. and Highland Ave., there’s quite a lot.I ordered the 1/4 Lb. Nathan’s Hot Dog combo with a bag o’ chips and a Coke ($6.50). I went with nacho cheese as a topping for an additional 25¢ ($6.50). The dog was plump and juicy and the nacho cheese added a nice kick. The chips were kind of a let down. They have those really small, non “Big Grab” bags, that hold approximately 3.5 chips per bag. I was left with a small void in my belly that definitely needed to be filled, so I went back up and got another dog, not a 1/4 pounder, but the small one ($1.75) with shredded cheddar (an additional 25¢). Now, I was full of hot doggy goodness. Ahhh….

Jam didn’t want to risk not getting full, so he went with the Triple Crown (8.75), which consists of 2-1/4 Lb. All-beef dogs, one side (he got the Potato Salad – very small portion), and a drink. He got chili, shredded cheese and mustard which added 50¢ on both. That boy can put it down, dude. Jam really enjoyed his as well, with the only complaint being that he thought the potato salad portion was a sample size.

With Lonnie’s Taste of Chicago opening soon just down the road behind KFC, this place will hold it’s own, and we’ll see who comes out on top in the new Hot Dog wars in the Highlands. The more the merrier, I say!

Don’t forget KC and the Hot Dog Stand near the corner of Bardstown and Speed Avenue as well. Apparently it’s the summer of hot dogs in the Highlands.

6.50 for a dog, chips and coke! That’s insane!
    I can imagine $4.50 or even $5 but $6.50 that’s highway robbery.
I can’t imagine that I’ll be frequenting this place at those prices.
Shit. Here at DCE we sell 2 slices of Oak St. Pizza and a can of beer or soda for $5 tax included.
Dogs should be a buck, buck and a half, 1/4lbs. maybe $2 or $2.5 a soda should cost no more than $1. and chips should only be $1.
So there we go that’s $4 for what you had by my reckoning.
I mean I can go over to Cumberland and have a bison burger with fries for that price. For just double that I can go get a steak at Palermo.
I love a good hot dog, I’m from Chicago – but those prices will keep me from eating at Derby City Dogs.

Shaved Ice is back and i am so glad. You can get it at KCs hot dog stand. They have good Chicage style hot dogs too. Prices are not bad.

KC’s dogs are great! they have a new Yellow awning that allows you to know exactly where they are. Food is good, they have chairs and tables outside for you to sit and get comfy. Great location, great food.

OMG! I went to Derby City this weekend and decided to get a corndog, only because KC’s was out of them. Well, I wish I hadn’t. I knew the order was completed too fast and then I found out why. They microwave the corndogs! Yuck! My husband and I were both very disappointed, we were looking for fair corndog flavor and KC’s at least fry theirs. KC’s also has more topping options than DC and better prices. So if you like sponge covered hotdogs, then Derby City might be right for you, but I will stick with KC’s.

I agree with Nakia…I got the corn dog a week or so ago, hoping that after almost a year since that post, they’d come around and get a dern fryer.

HELL NO! They were the worst corn dog’s I’ve ever had. Spongy, greasy and not even heated all the way through.

    I was thoroughly disappointed. Blech!!!
