Café LouLou

I’ve been hearing so much about this place, that I figured I should get around to checking it out. In August, they are also opening another location where SideStreet/Deli @ Douglass Loop used to be. That’s my neck of the woods, so I thought I’d get a head start and go ahead and fall in love with the place. Everyone else is, it seems! (for reasons I’ll get to after the jump…)

I was flying solo this fine July afternoon after stopping by MacAuthority in St. Matthews. I had planned on stopping in at Havana Rumba, but the line was out the door <!!!> and I was pretty hungry and didn’t want to wait. I made a good choice with Café LouLou, and next time I’m out that way, it might just be my first choice.

I commented on their great selection of beers on tap, and asked the bartender about the LouLou Lager brewed for them by BBC. The next thing I know, she was pouring me a sample. Nice! Thanks! It was a bit light for my taste, but not a bad Lager.

I sat at the bar and the friendly barkeep was being worked hard, filling drink orders, getting change, etc…but I didn’t get neglected. She got my Coke quickly and didn’t let it get too empty. I asked her what the best thing on the menu was, and she pretty much named everything they have. I figured that was either her not knowing, or her telling the truth. Based on just the one meal I ate, I think I know the answer.

I love Calzones, and every time I eat one, I giggle to myself thinking about pants legs (which is what Calzone means in Italian). I got the 4 Cheese Calzone ($10.50!!). This thing must have been from a pretty large pair of pants. The plating made the Calzone look like more than what you’d get from a Pizzeria, it was just fancy-lookin’. The browned crust was sprinkled with parmesan cheese, oregano, and a lot of marinara sauce covering it. I liked it already.

There sure was a LOT of cheese in this thing! Ricotta, mozzarella, goat cheese and fontina. The goat cheese added a great tang to the party of cheese, and the ricotta made everything creamier. Great textures, flavors, and surprisingly not as greasy as you’d think.

I couldn’t finish it all. I just couldn’t! Believe me, I tried. For $10.50, I wanted my money’s worth.

It’s official. I can’t wait for them to open up in the Highlands.
