O’Shea’s Irish Pub – Irish Week!

Valentino and I decided to try this popular nightlife spot out for lunch. Located in the “Irish” district of Baxter Ave., this is probably the first of the Irish pubs in the neighborhood (50 years!), and frankly one of the best fish sandwiches this side of Dublin (and it’s cellar).

The interior is exactly what I imagine Ireland looks like (although I’ve never been). There is lots of woodwork and brass. It just feels right in there. The alfresco area with the infamous fountain, which somehow “knows all” according to their website, adds to the charm. The owners also run Flanagan’s Ale House (just down the street), which has a very good beer list, and Brendan’s in St. Matthews, which is on our list of restaurants to check out.

Our waitress was a bit overworked during the lunch rush, but was super nice and attentive. Her red hair added to the whole Irish experience. 😉

Valentino ordered the Baxter Avenue Chicken Sandwich ($7.49) which is topped with applewood smoked bacon and cheddar. It looked awesome, and he assured me it was. The homemade herb spread sealed the deal.

I had to get the McMurphy’s Fish Sandwich ($6.59) – in retrospect, I’m glad I did since I’m pitting all these Irish places against each other here. It. Was. Awesome. The tartar sauce was good-n-creamy, and the fish had just the right amount of breading on it. I like a lotta breading, especially when it’s as crispy and tasty as this was.

As good as the Fish Sandwich was, I was really tempted by the Patrick’s Burger, which consisted of a burger seasoned with mesquite spices and slatherd in their homemade barbecue sauce, applewood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese. Sounds too good to be true.

As you have hopefully read on the Molly Malone’s review, this is the best Fish Sandwich on Baxter Ave. in my opinion. Perfect!
